Links & Menus
Creating Menus
RCCL sites contain navigation elements that work out of the box, including a main menu, utility menu (upper right corner), footer menu, and breadcrumbs (above page hero, left side). Additionally, some content types have their own menu and link elements. Refer to content type demo pages to learn more.
How to Add a Link to the Main Navigation
Useful Tips
- To edit menu links, navigate to "Structure > Menus" and select the appropriate menu.
- To edit footer menu headings, navigate to "Structure > Block layout" and select the appropriate heading under "Footer".
- Page URLs are based on the page title or the menu title assigned to the page. Site administrators can review URL alias patterns at "Configuration > Search and metadata > URL aliases".
- Breadcrumb navigation is only enabled for the Landing: Secondary and Utility Page content types. To enable breadcrumbs on additional content types, navigate to "Structure > Block layout" and select "Breadcrumbs".
Using Links
While working with links in the RCCL, here are some useful tips to keep in mind:
- Internal Links
For internal links within your site, it's a good practice to use relative URLs (e.g. https://www.rutgers.edu/academics - Note to keep the / after the URL domain). Optionally, when adding links inside component fields you can type the name of your existing page and select the entry. - Nodes
Each Drupal page, or node, has a corresponding node ID which can be used as a link (e.g. /node/23). The node ID can be retrieved from the page edit URL. Using the node ID instead of traditional links can prevent future issues if your page name changes. - Link Keywords
Drupal enables the following link keywords for specific scenarios:
<front> always links to the front page
<nolink> displays link text only
<button> displays keyboard-accessible link text only
Anchor Links
Anchor links, also known as jump links or in-page links, are used to direct users to a specific location on the same webpage. Anchors are often used on long or text-heavy pages to help users navigate without having to scroll. The RCCL allows anchor links to be placed at the component level and inside rich text fields, such as the Rich Text component.
