Rutgers Core Component Library (RCCL) Demo Site

The RCCL contains many features to create and manage news content on your website. If your team produces news, featuring articles on your site can provide many benefits, including:

  • Engaging content
  • SEO benefits from recurring content
  • New traffic from external search sources

Additionally, the RCCL allows articles to be shared between other RCCL websites via content syndication. Site owners can share their articles and subscribe to news content from other Rutgers units. If your team does not produce news, content syndication is a great way to include articles from across the university.

Note: If your unit regularly produces news or archival content, consider setting up a Landing: News page.

News in the RCCL

The Article page utilizes rich text and a small set of components ideal for content like news stories, guides, and announcements. It's important to review key features of the Article content type before building pages.

For more interactive and media rich articles, the RCCL offers the Feature Article content type. This page type is suited for lengthy feature stories with imagery and video.

News Categories

It's a good practice to setup taxonomies for article types before building your news pages. Article taxonomies are used to group and filter articles across your site.

To setup categories for different types of articles, go to Structure > Taxonomy > Topic in the content management system. Numerical taxonomy IDs (e.g. /taxonomy/term/10) are used to filter and display articles when using news related components.

News Components

After article pages are setup and published, they can be displayed on any page using select components. News related components require topic taxonomy categories to display on pages. Make sure to setup topic categories (see above) before creating articles.

Building Your Article Page

The following guide is a walkthrough of a basic RCCL article page build. As you follow along in your content management system, review these RCCL best practices:

  • Images & Video: Always optimize images before uploading in the CMS (ideally less than 1MB in size). The recommended minimum image dimensions are 2100 x 1400 pixels with a resolution of 72 DPI.
  • Duplicating Components: On the page edit screen, the three-dot toggle to the right of each component entry allows editors to remove the component from the page or duplicate it.
  • Revising Content: New revisions for content types and media files are automatically created upon saving. The revisions tab lists all versions of your content for reference. Users can revert to past versions or delete them.
